Progression of the Sport of American Football Essay

Introduction While within the Rose Bowl, Paul Chryst talked about how the Wisconsin Badgers’ overwhelming offensive size matching up against Texas Christian University’s speed-based defense (Thamel, 2010, pg 1). This is an example of how the â€Å"old-school smash-mouth† based players is transforming into a modern speed based team. In today’s age of football, speed is the most important factor. From recruiting, to the NFL draft, coaches are scouts are looking for players with good 40 times. The game has been changing in many ways within the last ten year. A lot of which may account for gear such as: pads, helmets, clothing and footwear. Research Question and Research Hypothesis Our question for this study is â€Å"Are molded cleats faster than detachable cleats on grass surface?† We hypothesize that molded cleats will produce a better 40-yard-dash time that detachable cleats due the weight difference between molded and detachable cleats. Operational Definitions For our research study, the term molded cleats means, a shoe with a cleat attached to the bottom that can’t be removed. The cleats are molded to the bottom of the shoe. When the cleats wear out, it can no longer be worn. Another term for our study is detachable cleat. A detachable cleat is a shoe with cleats on the bottom that can be taken out at any time at replaced. These cleats are normally more durable and a bit heavier. Review of Literature Within the United States of America, football is emerging as one of the nation’s favorite pastimes. There are many facets of football that make football so exciting; which includes the remarkable speed and size of the athletes.
